Gun Control and the horror at Virginia Tech

Before all the facts are known the call for gun control in the name of the people slaughtered there has already started. One thing is clear…gun control has probably already had an impact on the situation at Virgina Tech.  In a state where a concealed carry license is a relatively easy thing to acquire there remains one place where it is not allowed.  That place would be on the campus of a state college or university.

So we know two things now.  That if, as reports now say the shooter was here on a student Visa he obtained the guns illegally.  The second is that in a state where there is a large number of gun users no one shot back.  Because no one, other than the shooter, had the means to defend oneself.

Undoubtedly more info will pour forth.   When it does we should be careful about reading interpretations for this will most likely become a political football.

UPDATE: According to MSNBC

Cho had lived legally in the United States with his parents for 14 years, a U.S. immigration official said on Tuesday. He moved to the United States in September 1992 and lived in Centreville, Va., said Chris Bentley, a spokesman with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

That being said there is no police officer that can truly tell you that is possible to prevent a crime like this.  Cho was a determined and methodical planner who gave no indication that he was planning something like this. Any officer will tell you that in the great, vast majority of times an officer is involved with a crime it is after it has happened.

In today’s world there is no way to remove all the guns. Britain today has a growing problem with illegal weapons…and they are an island with strict gun control laws. The only person who has even a remote chance of stopping someone like Cho is an armed citizen. Anyone who tells you different is either naive or a liar.
