Left Wing Childishness Watch

Recently a school superintendent banned the wearing of clothes which depicted any flag. Various non-Left blogs have commented on this such as Blue Crab Boulevard, Clayton Cramer and Michelle Malkin.

Commentary runs from the ridiculous moral equivalence (if some flags are banned should it include the American) of the decision, to the lack of patriotism about wearing a depiction of the flag on the anniversery of 9-11, to the very real Free Speech issues of the decision. Are flags, in and of themselves, disruptive to public order? There’s a host of issues. But how does the Left weigh in?

Take Comments from Left Field which chastises those pundits mentioned above for failure to know about US Title 4 Ch.1 which is the law of Flag Ettiqutte.

John, John, John. If only you had bothered to serve in the military and performed in a Colors ceremony, or at least had the wherewithall to learn about Flag Etiquette before speaking, you might be patriotic enough to know that NO SCHOOL should be allowing its students to wear clothing depicting the American Flag.

You see, US Code Title 4 Chapter 1 deals with flag etiquette, specifically how to properly honor and display the flag so as to ensure proper respect is displayed. Many patriots forget to look this bit of literature up, however, as they proceed to paste the stars and stripes on everything they own to prove just how patriotic they are.

I suppose that this is some form of sarcasm since the blogger clearly thinks that an amendment to the Constitution banning burning the Flag is wrong.
Apparently banning gay marriage has replaced flag burning as the go-to wing-nut issue.

The President won this campaign by employing one simple tactic, fear. Fear of terrorist attacks, fear of pointy headed liberals with their fancy words, fear of burning the flag

Of course, we might argue that the law actually pertains to the flag, rather than wearing a depiction of it. But more importantly for sarcasm to work the goal you are trying to contrast, which we suppose is that the very people outraged about burning the flag are the people desecrating it by wearing it, must actually be stated. But that takes thought.

What this really is is the blogging equivalent of “neener-neener-neeeeener!”. A point of fact taken out of context used against people who mostly didn’t say what the blogger implies. That’s the level of discourse one has come to expect from the Left. Argument by insult instead of taking the opportunity to challenge the intellectual honesty of people who oppose flag burning while allowing people to wear the flag.

Sadly, Comments from Left Field is not an atypical example of what passes for intellectual argument.
