U.S. President Barack Obama is open to the idea of reaching out to moderate elements of the Taliban, The New York Times reported on Saturday.
This is the sort of thing that you imagine Corky Thatcher saying.

Obama said that some of the U.S. success in Iraq involved reaching out to Islamic fundamentalists who had been alienated by the tactics of al Qaeda in Iraq.
But, Mr. President, you’ll note that we didn’t reach out to “Moderate al Qaeda”. The reason we didn’t, sir, is that no such thing exists. Because they, like the Taliban, are murdering religious extremists. The key being “extremists”....which, Mr. Obama, excludes the concept of “moderation”.
You should resign, Mr. Obama, NOW, before you destroy our nation and endanger our citizens any more then your inexperienced, overwhelmed and ideologically driven administration already has.
You mean like “moderate elements of the Iraqi resistance”? No, we never did anything like that.
Stop and pay attention to why we wound up going after the Taliban: because they wouldn’t roll over on Al Qaeda after 9/11.
